A unique life allowed Clarival do Prado Valladares (1918-1983) to leave an important legacy for Brazil’s artistic and architectural heritage. Even though he was educated and worked as a physician, this native of Bahia became notorious for the projects he developed as an art researcher and critic. Clarival do Prado Valladares’ merit came from his capacity to combine the typical scientific methodology of medicine with analysis of the artistic object – his two passions.

His marriage with Erica, daughter of Emílio Odebrecht, brought the Prado Valladares and Odebrecht Families together. This marked the start of an important partnership toward the country’s editorial production. For many years, the artist was the mentor of the Organization’s cultural editions program, which currently has over 200 sponsored titles.

Books by Clarival do Prado Valladares himself were published by Odebrecht. The researcher left a vast bibliography, with works such as Nordeste Histórico e Monumental (“The Historical and Monumental Northeast”), Aspectos da Arte Religiosa no Brasil (“Aspects of Religious Art in Brazil”), Rio Barroco – Rio Neoclássico (“Baroque Rio – Neoclassic Rio”) and The Impact of African Culture on Brazil. He also worked as professor at the Federal University of Bahia School of Fine Arts.
